What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is a profession regulated by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists (CSP). All practitioners must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Physiotherapy uses a number of modalities to treat acute and chronic conditions related to muscles, bones and joints, as well as neurological conditions. Untreated aches and pains can develop into long term problems. Physiotherapy can help alleviate symptoms by addressing the underlying cause and prevent them from developing into something more serious.

The modalities used include manual therapy (e.g., massage), electrotherapy (ultrasounds) and exercise therapy as appropriate.

A physiotherapy session includes a full assessment where you will be asked about your health, so that any health issues can be highlighted and the therapist can be aware of cautions and contraindication to certain treatment modalities. You will also be asked about your life style,  in order to have a better understanding of what your body is used to. The session will then progress to a physical assessment, before a tailored treatment program is implemented. Another important part of the assessment is to set goals together with the therapist, based on what would be an acceptable outcome for you from your physiotherapy treatment program.
